Message from the Dean
Dean John Bear Keeping our college's alumni informed about all the exciting developments here at NSM is a priority for me. That is why we have overhauled the look and distribution of our publications.

Our redesigned newsletters will give you the latest news about our faculty's research breakthroughs, our students' achievements and your former classmates' career successes – all in an attractive, easy-to-read format.

In this debut of the revamped Momentum, you can learn about the dream team of geophysicists our college is assembling. Their work will not only unlock new petroleum deposits, it will make the University of Houston a world leader in energy research.

This issue also features other ways our college is tackling the world's energy crisis – from a program in South Africa to address the international shortage of petroleum geophysicists to new degrees in atmospheric science focusing on air pollution and climate change.

In other articles, we show how our computer science department – through new initiatives like a video gaming course and a software design track – is preparing students for the careers of tomorrow.

And on a lighter note, we've included some photos from the pre-game Homecoming party we hosted for NSM alumni. It was a blast catching up with so many alumni who have a passion for UH and Cougar football.

We invite you to read about these topics in this issue. Please enjoy, and let me know what you think.
