Many students pursue College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics studies with the ultimate goal of becoming a physician. Historically, NSM has excelled at preparing students for medical studies. Last year alone, thirty-one were accepted to medical school. And increasingly our graduates are attending top-rated institutions.

This issue of Momentum highlights alumni who are attending Harvard Medical School, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and Baylor College of Medicine, and a University of Texas Southwestern Medical School graduate who is a medical resident at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Baylor College of Medicine accepts a number of NSM grads every year. Many are DeBakey High School for Health Professions students who participate in the Houston Premedical Academy at UH. Another article explains this important program, which is helping meet Houston’s health-care needs.

Successful alumni often cite the role faculty played in their success. This is true of NSM graduates who have gone on to medical school and distinguished medical careers. We profile Linda Magill, MD, an anesthesiologist who credits UH professors with believing in her dream of a science-related career and encouraging her to stretch intellectually.

Another NSM graduate, Malcolm L. Mazow, MD, recounts helping form a premedical society chapter to encourage students planning on attending medical or dental school. The ophthalmologist fondly remembers the chapter advisor as a faculty member who provided leadership in motivating students to bring the organization to the campus.
