The spring semester is now in full swing, and the university community is buzzing with excitement as the new Science and Engineering Research and Classroom Complex, or the SERCC, actually begins to look like Cesar Pelli’s architectural drawings. While we dodge bulldozers and watch the cranes hoist concrete panels, we are reminded that the time will soon come when the building can be occupied by scientists working in the fields of bionanotechnology and nanohealth.  Among them will be Professor Xiaolian Gao, featured in this issue, whose scientific breakthrough made the pages of the Houston Chronicle and the New York Times in January.
This issue of Momentum also features Assistant Professor of Physics Kevin Bassler, who is a consummate teacher and researcher—and as we learn, a gifted photographer.  We introduce you to Dr. Robert Sheriff, who has served the university as a professor of geosciences for over 30 years and, with his wife Margaret, has given us resources to provide scholarships and to attract and retain the best faculty.

Every issue of Momentum features a student, and Clarina de la Cruz, a graduate student of well-known Professor Paul Chu, has an inspiring story.  I hope you enjoy this issue of Momentum.

Sincerely,
John L. Bear
